    Thanks for a great 2009

With 2010 just a few hours away we at Heartland Steam Cleaning would just like to thank everyone for another successful year. Let’s take a quick review on 2009, and then our goals for 2010.

    2009:

    • Over the course of the year we added several commercial clients.
    • By late summer sales exceeded those of 2008, albeit dropping all outsourced advertising.
    • Implemented a pricing calculator on our brand new website, allows customers to shop and compare prices of our top competitors.
    • Expanded our residential side to include vent cleaning and mattress cleaning.
    • Established a better web presence by exploring new social mediums like facebook, twitter, linkedin, digg, youtube and our new blog which you are currently reading.
    • Established and image of “no hassle.” A principal which few companies follow.

    2010 Goals:

    • Expand residential cleaning to include grout color sealing.
    • Add at least 100 new clients to our residential side.
    • Add at least 10 new commercial clients.
    • Exceed 2009 sales.
    • Establish even more of a web presence, focusing on SEO.
    • Have more fun meeting and cleaning for people than we did in 2009!

Thanks again for supporting us and we hope to serve you again for years to come!

    All about mold

The public’s concern over possible health dangers of mold has grown dramatically in the last decade, spawning (pun intended) a booming industry. Insurance companies have paid millions of dollars to home-owners who made claims that mold in their homes was not dealt with properly. For this reason many insurance policies no longer cover mold.

The safest and most effective way to deal with mold is to be sure everything is clean and dry!

But even mold that has been “killed” can still trigger allergic reactions and perhaps other health issues.

    How mold works:

Mildew grows most actively in the dark moist areas, between 68 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, if it has a food source. The food source can be organic matter such as jute backing, hair pad and soil from sewage. Even synthetic carpets contain a variety of organic soils, so mold may appear even after a clear water flood.

As mold digests it’s food, it will release a gas. This is the source of the odor. Conditions that are favorable for mold growth are also favorable for bacteria. A sour odor from bacteria may be present long before mold has had the necessary time to grow and multiply and produce odor.

    How to remove it:

As with any odor, you must treat and remove the source, to eliminate the odor. Because carpet is an absorbent material, in most cases the infected areas must be removed and disposed of. The sub-flooring must also be treated with an anti-microbial to kill mold. Most chemicals used to treat mold are considered safe, but be aware different people may react to different triggers. Do not use disenfectants without consulting a professional.

Applying a carpet fragrance such as febreeze will not eliminate the odor, it will only cover it up for a short period. The problem must be treated at the source!

What you need to know, Part 2: The Cleaning

Read this first if you havnt already: What you need to know, Part 1: The walk-through

After the initial pre-inspection and walk-through it’s time for the actual cleaning.  For now, we will review how steam cleaners operate.

    1. The techs will begin setting up and bringing in their equipment. – Because hoses are connected to the truck mounted carpet cleaning machine, the door will need to be slightly cracked during the cleaning.
    2. If necessary, the tech’s will start with a pre-vacuum. – This removes dry soils and loose contaminants.
    3. A hot carpet pre-conditioner is then applied over all areas. Typically, the techs will start at the farthest point, and work towards the door, breaking down the areas to be cleaned in “sections.” Several areas will be pre-treated at once.
    4. Furniture moving. – Furniture pieces will be moved out just enough to clean the areas underneath. The pieces are then moved back to their original position with protective blocks under the legs.
    5. Extraction & Spotting – A high pressurized solution is injected into the carpet pile, the immediately extracted using the truck mounted carpet cleaning unit. The solution is a mix of 230 degree water, and a pH balancing neutralizer to prevent that sticky residue other methods may cause. During the extraction, techs will use special spotting agents on stubborn spots and stains.
    6. Carpet protector applied (optionally) – All carpet when it’s manufactured has a protective coating applied. This “sctochguard” creates a unique invisible shield around carpet fibers providing superior repellency and outstanding soil protection for all types of residential carpet.
    7. Carpet grooming – Using a carpet rake, the tech will brush out all areas cleaned. This helps distribute carpet protectors evenly, spreads out concentrated pockets of moisture allowing the carpets to dry faster and removes cleaning marks.
    8. Post inspection – After the service is complete, a walk-through is performed with the customer.

Over the next few weeks, we will break down each step in greater detail.

    Carpet Cleaning 101

So you’ve realized that it’s time to clean your carpets, but you don’t know where to start. Should you do it yourself, or hire it out? You have all these questions like: who should I call? What type of cleaning is the best? How much will it cost? Can a professional really do a better job?

Your not alone. People every day search the web for answers to all these questions. But there are so many so called “experts” that you don’t know who to trust. How do you really know?

How do you find a reputable and professional who is honest, reliable, experienced and is reasonably priced? I can tell you they do exist. I’ve met good carpet cleaners from all over the country who practice the same ethical and honest principals which my company, Heartland Steam Cleaning, was founded on.

Unfortunately the carpet cleaning industry is flooded with uneducated, inexperienced, unethical and downright fraudulent companies. It’s a hustle to them, as you can witness in the video posted here.

So we’ve set out to educate the masses by dedicating this 100% free website to help combat those companies giving the carpet cleaning industry a bad name. This site will tell you everything you need to know about carpet cleaning techniques and methods so you can make an informed decision when hiring a professional.

You will never see an advertisement or pop-ups. We do not use cookies or any spy-ware.

This site is for you, the customer. Not the professional.

Tags: , , , the walk through, what to expect

What you need to know, Part 1: The walk-through

The first step for every carpet cleaner is the walk-through. After the tech’s introduce themselves, they will ask the customer to escort them through all the areas to be cleaned. Along the way the tech will ask some important questions:

    1. How old is your carpet?
    2. When was the last time you’ve had your carpets professionally cleaned?
    3. Have you had your carpets treated with a sctochguard?
    4. Are there any major spills or accidents?
    5. Do you have pets?

This allows the tech’s to determine:

    1. Level of soiling
    2. Carpet condition
    3. Furniture condition and what furniture will be moved
    4. What kind of results to expect
    5. The cost
    6. Estimated dry time
    7. Determine areas that need “special attention”
    8. How long the service will take

Don’t wait until the service is complete before seeing your bill, you’ll be terrifed what some carpet cleaners try and pull on uninformed customers. If your tech does not discuss the issues listed above, ask them. If you don’t get any answers, ask them to leave and call a different carpet cleaning company. Do not let a carpet cleaner into your home if your not comfortable with them.

    $9.95 per room? Unlikely.

A local news station investigates carpet cleaning companies offering a rate of $9.95 per room.
