    Shaws choice: Hot Water Extraction

Shaw Industries, of Dalton, Georgia, is the world’s largest carpet manufacturer. It started in 1946 as a small business dyeing scatter rugs. Today it has annual sales of more than $5 billion, and employs more over 30,000 people.

    From http://www.Shawfloors.com:
“Research indicates that the hot water extraction system provides the best capability for cleaning. This system is commonly referred to as “steam cleaning,” although no steam is actually generated. The process consists of applying a cleaning agent into the carpet pile and using water in the extractor to recover the used solution and soil. This can be done from a truck-mounted unit outside the home with only the hose and wand brought inside or by a portable system brought into the home.”

“Shaw warranties require that the homeowner be able to show proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction (commonly called “steam” cleaning) by a professional cleaning service…”

How to select a professional carpet cleaning company

Believe or not, every carpet cleaning company is different. Some use hot-water extraction, others use encapsulation. Some charge by the area/room, others charge by the square foot. So how do you know which company to select? Listed are the things you should look for, and ask before hiring a carpet cleaning company. Don’t be a victim of malicious, uneducated carpet cleaners.

    • Can they offer a list of references – Every company should have a list of references for their potential clients.
    • Are they insured – This seems like an obvioius one, but their are lots of carpet cleaning companies who don’t carry insurance.
    • What type of training – Carpet cleaning is a highly skilled and technical business. Ask how they were trained, and how much experience they have.
    • What type of cleaning they use – There are many different cleaning systems, read up on each method. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. We have found that hot-water extraction with truck-mounted units is the best method of removing the maximum amount of soils and contaminants trapped in your carpet. If you don’t believe us, just ask the majority of major carpet manufactureres.
    • What type of chemicals – Ask where they buy their chemicals, what they use, and how they use them. Do they pre-treat the carpet? Are they fully equipped to handle the toughest stains?
    • Reasonable pricing – Do not, I repeat, DO NOT hire a company offering a “$9.95 per room special.” As a professional carpet cleaner for a decade, I can tell you it’s impossible for a carpet cleaner to properly clean your carpets that cheap. Unfortunately this is the classic “bait and switch” advertising that has consumed our industry. Check out this video of a local news agency confronting these companies.
    • What kind of guarantee – No carpet cleaner can guarantee that all your spots will come out, and we tell all our clients that. But rarely do we come across something that we can’t get out. You’ll know if the technician did everything he could to try and remove a spot, some just won’t go away, it’s important to understand this. We do, however, offer an ironclad 100% money back guarantee if you are not completely happy though.
    • How long have they been in business? – Carpet cleaning is a technical business. There are many unethical carpet cleaning business, if they’ve been in business for many years you they are probably a company you can trust.
    • Get technical. – Do your research and ask very technical questions. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions about every step in their process.

    Good Luck!
